Izola

The crooked narrow streets of this charming old town contain a disparate wealth of attractive and interesting architecture from centuries past. The engaging portals of the old stone houses divulge something of the history of this former island settlement, and a number of traces speak of the half-millennium-long era of Roman colonisation. Izola’s picturesque shops and pleasant bars are indeed enticing, while the scent of rosemary and stone pine and the sound of the roaring sea waves allure one to explore a little further.

The white and coloured sails against the azure background of the high sea are a splendid sight. All vessels are afforded a haven within the new Marina, which is well equipped and offers a full range of services. Thus, Izola is fast becoming one of the leading centres of nautical tourism in the Adriatic.

Izola, a fishing port in the most traditional sense, is a real mecca for lovers of seafood, while its hinterland is blessed with verdant vineyards and olive groves.

In addition to heading out to sea, the adventure-hungry can also make excursions inland from Izola, visit picturesque Istrian villages and Socerb Castle with its astounding panorama, as well as take a trip to the Lipica stud farm and ride a noble Lipizzaner horse. There is also the High Karst, together with the Postojna and Škocjan caves, and the neighbouring towns of Koper, Piran, and Portorož – which also boasts a casino’. A little further afield there are the Alps and the resort of Lake Bled, as well as Ljubljana-the nation’s capital, not to mention Venice and the Brioni archipelago…
